" An all-star line-up convened and recorded for a BBC radio project, subsequently radically reworked by Hugh Hopper. These are clear, defined and shapely improvisations, music rather than noise based, invoking the best of the '70s rock- improvisational approaches; genre-free and structurally-minded. Robert appears in an unfamiliar role, playing trumpet throughout, and everyone is on top form. A rarity in these times, this is deep rooted music that grows with listening." (Chris Cutler/Rèr).

(BBC review by Nick Reynols) "Clear Frame showcases some of the finest players of the avant-garde of British jazz and improv. Saxophonist Lol Coxhill, Charles Hayward (drummer with pioneering This Heat), Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine) on bass and percussionist Orphy Robinson, with special guest national treasure Robert Wyatt on cornet. How do you judge improvised music? Firstly, on the tones and techniques of the individual players. Are they original and inventive? Do they make sounds you've never heard before? Secondly, are they listening to each other? Does the whole thing add up to something or is it just...bits? This album passes both these tests and more. It's a wonderful piece of group improvisation. Hugh Hopper is brilliant throughout, providing little licks, riffs and mutating half melodies, which hold the whole sound together. And when Hopper and Hayward lock into a groove (for example Tin Plate) they're very funky in a deliciously fractured way. The other outstanding presence is Robinson. He brings a clean, fresh approach to this kind of music, his steel pan and vibraphone playing showing real originality especially when contrasted with bursts of noise and distortion (Noise Gate). The complaint about this set is that at times Robinson is simply not loud enough. Coxhill's sax and Wyatt's cornet squeak and bleat but also combine in sombre, lyrical flurries. Clear Frame is 52 minutes long but whizzes by. Edgy and atmospheric but never bloated or heavy handed, it's really, really good. Highly recommended."

"Featuring the all-star cast of Charles Hayward, Hugh Hopper, Lol Coxhill and Orphy Robinson (vibraphone, steel drums), with guest Robert Wyatt on cornet. Eight strong pieces in a rock-inflected, improvisation-empowered, loose - but not too loose - free-associating open style that has become as rare as hen's teeth today. Clearframe refers back to time when free jazz, rock and all the experimental fringes were converging in search of a polyglot musical language eschewing the exclusions and rules that hedged their different genres about; and all the participants here (except Orphy Robinson - too young) were part of that project and have been shifting genres and evading labels ever since. To my ears, this record returns to unfinished business and does so at the highest level. These chaps know their way around. Clearframe offers a rare opportunity to listen to masters at work in an almost non-existent field. And it's great to hear Lol in full flight. " (Chris Cutler/Rèr)."

[ 1993, SubRosa | CAT#SR59, CD ]

Hilly Fields / Unearthing Fossil Fuels / November Building / Slow Air / Seventy Two, Trade White / Rumour Is Mobile / Slim Pickens / My Secret Alphabet / Thick Skin, Paper Thin / Outcomelt
"This cd is born from a collaboration between Charles Hayward (founder of This Heat & The Camberwell Now) and multi-instrumentist Nick Doyne-Ditmas. After Survive the Gesture (songs), Skew-Whiff (tribute to Mark Rothko) & Switch on War (music from the armchair theatre of war), this release reunites the song writing, the improvised music and sonic researches in a more positive way to look at the world. Songs and soundfields, a résumé of Charles' universe. WHAT HAYWARD SAYS: "What interested me is the way certain shapes, figures and textures would reappear in completely different context as if made of different material. It was like a long line, a series of very strong moments that all seemed to relate to each other. It's like breaking a dream but also keeping the dream going. The shapes are there but you can't understand why they are there. That was a big influence for me in terms of constructing the record as a long and winding shape. The lyrics make a lot of sense in a linear way first and as the record develops it becomes more and more like snapshots and you can't really work out what you are focusing on." This album offers a wide variety of musical landscapes that ranges from clear pop songs (Hilly Fields, Unearthing Fossil Fuels, My Secret Alphabet....) to ambient instrumental pieces.. " (from SubRosa website).

' SWITCH ON WAR '

[ 1991, SubRosa | CAT#SR40, CD ]

/ Crying Shame / Strong-Arm Dead-Line / Pinpoint / Sweetheart / Never Before
"13 years later, post-Gulf War 2 and the situation seems even worse, more far reaching, the stalemate re-configured and therefore more convenient for certain interests, the hypocrisy of our politicians and "free" media even more shameless and blatant, what is really happening even less clear and yet staring us in the face. Perhaps now is as good a time as any to listen again. MUSIC FOR THE ARMCHAIR THEATRE OF WAR. A UNIQUE AND ENTERTAINING SOUVENIR. FOR YOU TO TREASURE AND KEEP. Switch on War a dream state synthesis of nights watching live TV coverage of the 1st Gulf War, the reduction of colours to an electron midnight blue, the long periods of nothing really happening, the contrasting landscapes, (the desert, the city at night, the newsroom), the sudden hurtling through space, through a doorway, a camera on the nose of a missile, the bearing of silent witness slowly turning into complicity and mute acquiescence. At the back of the mind the thought that all this would soon be reduced to snapshot memories, archive, newsreel, history. Originally devised as a performance for the Club Integral, in South London, at the height of the military activity, 'Switch on War' was a harsh and brutal response to the media coverage of the conflict informed by a grotesque and disconcerting anti-music aesthetic heavily influenced by the disorientating, overloaded sound world of Space Invaders arcades. The CD version was recorded binaurally some weeks later, live in a disused morgue, as the war came to its stalemate close. By this time the anger had a bleak streak of sadness, a distorted expressionist requiem. This CD had the life expectancy of a magazine article or some such, no more than a year and it would be archive, a mere souvenir." (from Subrosa.net).

' SKEW WHIFF - A tribute to Mark Rothko '

[ 1990, SubRosa | CAT#SR33, CD ]

/ The Actor merges with the Crowd / Cold Blue Sun / Smell of Metal / Lopside / Thames Water Authority
"These five recent compositions of Charles Hayward were inspired by the last paintings of Mark Rothko - haunted by the relationship between dark and colored masses - and the rush of feeling, both physical and spiritual. that they generate the composer is revealed here in all his blinding dephts. Skew-whiff remains nonetheless an unceasing homage to Greenwich, the ancient maritime spirit, white cliffs and open seas. A tribute to the black and slow waters of the Thames.. " (from Subrosa.net).

"HISTORY : After the dissolution of the extraordinary and mythical THIS HEAT and the split of the uncomprehended THE CAMBERWELL NOW, Charles Hayward, the frontman of these groups, composer, singer, drummer (one of England's most extraodinary), keyboardist... finally records his first solo album (...) FROM XTC TO ROBERT WYATT : Back in 1988 Charles presented a collection of songs in the finest English vein (from XTC to Robert Wyatt). Long time out of stock, SURVIVE THE GESTURE was digitally remastered and is now issued on Sub Rosa (...) A PURE EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE : Nobody will be able to resist Australia, the final song of the album, which Charles thinks of his friend who has set out to try his fortune on another continent and sings ..... And now he sleeps through our days, ..... Dreamtime while we work ..... And he spends Chrismas Day in the sunshine.... " (from Subrosa.net).

"This Heat, the first record, (The Blue and Yellow ) was a landmark release. It tore up the book and laid new rules for band composition and performance. The music was without precedent; the musicians uncompromising; the recordings hammeringly intense and the sound deep, radical, and rich. This was music stripped back to the bone but never simplified. And over time it has also proved itself prescient; there are musical innovations here that anticipate genres that would take another 15 years to reappear." (from this heat official page at MySpace).

/ Cutty Sark / Pearl Divers / Spirit of Dunkirk / Resplash / Daddy Needs a Throne / Working Nights / Sitcom / Wheat Futures / Speculative Fiction / Green Lantern / The Ghost Trade / Greenfingers / Mystery of the Fence / Know How / Element Unknown
"After the demise of This Heat, Charles Hayward continued to work with Trefor Goronwy, bassist from the last manifestation of the group, the two of them joining forces with Steve Rickard who, for the new band, designed the cassette 'switchboard' a kind of proto-sampler - but that's not the half of it (Steve's article fully explaining the device is reprinted in the new, expanded booklet that comes with the CD). Musically, Camberwell both followed and departed from the style of This Heat. Formally and gesturally there are common elements, but there is far greater transparency and the sound palette is quite different: the music is more placed than grown, as the slow accumulation and evolution of material in This Heat gives way to a more immediate and orderly development of the material in Camberwell Now. The songs - nostalgic, scary, quietly desperate - peer into the future to find harbour but confront only fragments of ruin. Debris and disturbance eat away at the root and corrode each shiny surface (this is mostly the musical work of the cassette switchboard). The juxtaposition of powerful, virtuosic playing and the eerie, often unidentifiable keenings, chords and constant motion of the cassettes is one of the things that make Camberwell Now so expressive of its time - when the whole social and political fabric of a no-longer-great Britain was unravelling. This definitive edition collects the entire released output of the group together (two EPs and an LP) newly re-mastered by the band and repackaged with full notes, lyrics, additional photographs and artwork" (from Rèr website).

The group existed until mid-1991, performing live in Europe, North America and the former Soviet Union. "Having originated from a college band by the name of Pooh and the Ostrich Feather, Quiet Sun was formed in 1970 after MacCormick had made friends with Robert Wyatt, the son of a friend of his mother's. The band integrated jazz elements and sparkling keyboard sounds into their complex music - similar to Soft Machine - but Manzanera's energetic guitar made their music very different from the Softs' who had not been using any guitar on their regular albums before the 1975 release of Bundles (if you don't count bass guitar), but had used reeds as the main other melody instruments aside of keyboards. Quiet Sun split up in 1972, Manzanera to Roxy Music, MacCormick to Matching Mole, Hayward to This Heat, and Jarrett began to teach mathematics.
In 1975, Manzanera booked a studio for 26 days to record his album Diamond Head and got Quiet Sun together again to record an album from their old composed material in the studio at the same time. This first and only album of theirs, with participation of Brian Eno and the late Ian MacCormick, titled Mainstream was critically acclaimed and became the New Musical Express' album of the month. You may find one of Quiet Sun's songs on Robert Wyatt's Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard, under the name of "Team Spirit", and other few on the already mentioned Diamond Head." (from Wikipedia)

"(...) It's to be hoped that Hopper manages to keep this band together for further recording projects. The fact that this whole program is credited to all four members of the band suggests it's a highly cooperative effort. Fair enough if so. It's high time such values were repeatedly celebrated in these times of unscrupulous individualism (...)"

"Associated in the mid-80s with Lost Jockey and the Michael Nyman Band, Regular Music's recorded output has been extremely sparse. So far as I know, their self-titled album from 1985 remains out-of-print. It's easy to accuse composer Peyton Jones' music of being derivative. The opening Wardances and Wardances II on this album, with simple, interlocking vocal rhythms, sounds so similar to Meredith Monk's singing, for example, that you'd swear it was Monk if you weren't told otherwise. A lot of the other music here sounds like a cross between Michael Nyman and Philip Glass (the text on the title track reminds me of Einstein On The Beach). The two Purcell Manoeuvres featured even adopt the familiar Nyman tactic of appropriating another composer's music and extensively reworking it (Nyman used Purcell himself on The Draughtsman's Contract). It would perhaps be unfair to say that Peyton Jones is just a plagiarist or a clone: just that there's a great deal commonality of interest and style. Certainly, if you enjoy the music of any of the other composers mentioned, you'll enjoy North South East West too."

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL
' Eden '

[ 1984 LP, Rough trade | #_ ]

/ _____
"Their first album was released in 1984 in the UK as Eden. 1984 also saw the UK release of singles "Mine", and "Native Land". Their first UK hit single, "Each and Every One", had a jazzy sound, and E.B.T.G. was considered part of the jazz/pop movement known as sophisti-pop that included other British acts like Sade, Matt Bianco, and The Style Council, on whose Café Bleu album they guested. E.B.T.G. and Sade both worked with producer Robin Millar and engineers Ben Rogan and Mike Pela for their debut albums." (from Wikipedia)

EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL
' Everything but the girl '

[ 1984 LP, Sire/Blanco Y Negro | #1-25212 ]

/ _____
"Although Eden was released in the UK, a different recording, Everything But the Girl, was released in the United States. The U.S. release contained about half the tracks from 'Eden', along with some different tracks, including 'Mine' and 'Native Land'. The U.S. release balanced the bossa nova stylings of the British version with a more folk rock aesthetic, helping to establish the group's eclectic musicality." (from Wikipedia)

"Diamond Head' was Phil's first solo project. Recorded in 1974 and 1975, it was released to widespread critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic in early summer 1975. Featuring several Roxy colleagues, the ubiquitous Brian Eno, his previous band 'Quiet Sun' and a host of top British musicians, 'Diamond Head' is a classic mixture of great songs and top performances.
